Last month, Jason Heaton brought us the epic tale of the cheap replica Rolex Oyster Perpetual that survived Sir Francis Chichester’s grueling 226-day voyage around the globe. As luck would have it, that very watch made a very rare appearance in London last week, and I was lucky enough to be there to see it.
Now owned by the Rolex Museum, it appears to have been fully restored to its original state. Either that or, you might think, the Clipper Route was unusually calm during Sir Chichester’s crossing. It wasn’t. In a letter, Chichester wrote that the watch was “frequently banged, also doused by waves coming aboard; but it never seemed to mind all this.” Here for your enjoyment are some pictures of that very watch, 50 years on. Chichester’s Oyster Perpetual was part of a small collection of historically important watches flown to London to celebrate the company’s centenary. Luxury replica Rolex Watch Company was actually incorporated in London, 101 years ago, before Hans Wilsdorf moved it to Geneva in 1919.
